This fanfare was commissioned by Christopher Mowat in 2002 for the Graduation ceremony at the Welsh College of Music & Drama. The fanfare motif is first announced by the trumpets in the opening bars, and then develops across the whole ensemble as the piece progresses.
    Robert Davies
Rob was born in 1980 in a small town called Neath in south Wales. He started playing the cornet when he was 11 years old and soon joined local brass and wind bands. He started to compose when he was 15 years old and has always enjoyed writing for brass instruments. Rob continued his musical training on the trumpet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he gained a BA(Hons) in 2001 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance a year later. He continued to compose while he was a student. A movement of his piano concerto was given a workshop performance by the RWCMD Symphony Orchestra. In 1999, Rob won the student section of the Performing Rights Society's 50th Anniversary Fanfare Competition. Andrew Fawbert (professor of euphonium) commissioned a piece for the Euphonium Ensemble while Christopher Mowat (Head of Brass) asked Rob to write two brass pieces. The first was for the college's brass band and the second was for the brass ensemble at the 2002 graduation ceremony at the St David's Hall Cardiff. The fanfare was premiered to some 2000 people but unfortunately his name was accidentally omitted from the programme of events!. Rob also won the Holst Bursary to study Film Composition with Miguel Mera at the Dartington International Summer School in 2002.
