Having initially failed part of his B.Mus at Oxford University, the evidently talented William Walton was rescued by fellow undergraduate Sacheverell Sitwell inviting him to stay for a while. The rather eccentric Sitwell siblings devised an ‘entertainment’ to be recited into a megaphone peeping through a gap in drawn theatrical curtains. The young Walton wrote the music for 6 players drawing on anything ‘modern’ including the latest dance crazes and popular songs. First performed publicly in 1923 it became the talk of the town.
