
Ian Butterworth
Ian Butterworth was born in Wimbledon and studied at the Royal College of Music as a Junior Exhibitioner and at Nottingham and London Universities. For several years he led the Morley College Chamber and Salomon Orchestras, playing under such distinguished conductors as Andrew Davis, Simon Rattle and John Eliot Gardiner.
Ian has composed and arranged numerous works for small and large ensembles, many of them for young players in Croydon where he was Director of the Music Service for several years.
As conductor of the Croydon Youth Orchestra for many years he directed concerts in numerous European countries, and since 2001 he has been the conductor of the Gwent Youth orchestra, taking them on a tours to the Czech Republic and Italy. He is also conductor of the Erato Orchestra which specialises in performances of Haydn's less well known symphonies.
