"... With the exception of the first tune in the book, 'New York New York', the range of all pieces lies within the Grade 4 scale limits. The emphasis seems to be on slide work and rhythmic movement. If this is the intention then it certainly achieves the aim. Most tunes have awkward little corners for the player to practise but, having said this, the corners lie nicely on the slide and will inspire a certain confidence in the player when mastered. The High G in NYNY should not deter younger players but might prove a distraction leading up to it. The piano parts complement the solo line well and have frequent dialogues with the trombone, which can be highlighted when helping young players to listen and interact. It covers a range of technical issues and provides good teaching material whilst allowing the young player to feel that progress is being made." Reviewed ' Music Teacher'
Alan Gout
Alan Gout read music at Oxford. After a short time at the R.C.M. and a stint as a pub pianist he joined the original D'Oyly Carte opera as a trombonist. This versatility soon led to work in the West-End theatre, arranging and composing at the National Theatre and musical direction for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He combined musical direction for children's TV programmes with collaborating on music workshops for schools. He has conducted ballet with London City Ballet and English National Ballet, all the while gaining a reputation as an expert arranger and composer of original light music, especially in the educational field.

He teaches at Drama Centre, London and at Dartington International Summer School and is musical Director of the Berkeley Square Society Band.
